Special Notice Justices' Terms Could Change in 2010 TISL is considering a constitutional amendment that could change the terms of members of the Court. Justices serve one-year terms, which currently begin on July 1. The Court and the TISL Executive Council have concluded that it would be better for the terms to coincide with the Executive Council's terms, which begin when the General Assembly adjourns in November. The Executive Council intends to recommend this change to the 41st General Assembly in November 2010 in the form of a constitutional amendment. If adopted by the General Assembly, the terms of justices appointed this year would be extended for 4 1/2 months to implement the transition. This means the Court appointed this year would serve for the 41st General Assembly in November 2010 and for the 42nd General Assembly in November 2011. Thereafter, justices' terms would be for one year from November until November. |
